76077 is ‘The Forgotten Standard’

76077 is a Standard Class 4 2-6-0 locomotive built by British Railways in 1956. It is one of just four members of the 115-strong class to survive (the others being 76017 on the Mid-Hants Railway, 76079 on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway and 76084 on the North Norfolk Railway) and it is the last of the quartet to be restored.

After arriving at the Gloucestershire Warwickshire Steam Railway (GWSR) in 1987, having been retrieved from the South Wales scrapyard at Barry by Chris Hinton, the engine was dismantled. Some restoration work was carried out but for various reasons, work stopped and the engine’s components were loaded on to wagons. It was stored away from public sight, pending resumption of work, to be largely forgotten for over thirty years.

Now 76077 has been acquired by the specially-formed Toddington Standard Locomotive Limited (TSLL) to restore and operate this extraordinary survivor from the end of the steam age. TSLL is aiming to steam 76077 again in time for its 70th birthday in 2026 – with your support!
